Computational spectral imaging in the THz band

Abstract

Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.
 
Description The project has developed new silicon-based modulators for THz radiation. We have developed different ways of passivating the surfaces of silicon wafers in order to control the carrier density in the silicon, which affects the modulation response. Our initial study (https://doi.org/10.1038/s41598-019-54011-6) showed the impact of planar Al2O3 surface passivation layers grown by atomic layer deposition (ALD). This gave excellent modulation, but the long carrier lifetimes resulted in a relatively slow switching speed. A follow-up study showed it was possible to reach intermediate carrier lifetimes by patterning the surface passivation layers (https://doi.org/10.1063/5.0128234). The project has enabled new approaches for THz imaging using emissivity control (https://doi.org/10.1364/OPTICA.503936).
Exploitation Route Others may use the outcomes to develop a range of THz-based systems for imaging. These could have uses in a range of sectors including security imaging and medical devices (e.g. for cancer diagnosis).

Description The project has developed new ways of modulating THz radiation based on passivating silicon wafers in different ways.
