Abstract
Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.
Technical Summary
The Confidence in Concept scheme is a key part of MRC’s translational research strategy and provides annual awards to institutions, to be used flexibly to support the earliest stages of multiple translational research projects. The award can be used by the institution to support a number of preliminary-stage translational projects. The projects supported should aim to provide sufficient preliminary data to establish the viability of an approach –– before seeking more substantive funding. It is intended to accelerate the transition from discovery research to translational development projects by supporting preliminary work or feasibility studies to establish the viability of an approach.

PI Contribution | Proposed a novel potential solution for the angioplasty of arteries that are partially or fully occluded by calcification. Prototypes have been fabricated and are being tested to prove the concept. |
Collaborator Contribution | DrDA at Glenfield Hospital is also a practicing interventionist. He expressed the need for a medical device to treat calcified arteries with less risk to patients compared to the existing devices. He has also been consulted for preparation of our joint patent draft. |
Impact | The project is still at an early stage. It involves: physics, Electronics and mechanical engineering as well as MEMS from one side and cardiovascular sciences from the other. |

Title | Angioplasty of calcified arteries |
Description | A device 1 for and method of breaking-up, disrupting or disintegrating calcified or other hardened material within vessels of the human or animal body, comprises the provision of a catheter 2 having a lumen 9 extending between a distal end 5 and a proximal end 6 of the catheter and a displaceable element 4 at the distal end of the catheter configured for axial and / or radial displacement relative to the catheter when driven by pressure fluctuations within the lumen (e.g. a balloon). In a first embodiment a pressure pump 11 and pressure modulation source 12 are coupled to the proximal end of the catheter and are configured to apply a baseline pressure to the catheter lumen and to modulate the baseline pressure in the catheter lumen with one or more pressure impulses (preferably with a series of pressure pulses) respectively. In a second embodiment the balloon has a flexible outer structure (e.g. a mesh sleeve 20, Fig 2) which localises the outward force of the balloon, when inflated, to only a portion of the balloons external surface. |

Title | ULTRASONIC IMAGING |
Description | Method of ultrasound imaging in which vibration-induced localised (LOVIT) displacements code the ultrasound signal at the place of origin, enabling clutter cancellation. The require displacements can be induced by an acoustic radiation force (ARF) generated by an ultrasonic focused beam. One possibility for ARF-LOVIT is to acquire one photoacoustic (PA) image prior to the ARF push, and a second image immediately after the push when the non-zero displacement transient at the focus region is present. A difference image then highlights the signal from optically absorbing structures located inside the displacement region. Direct clutter, in contrast, originates from outside the imaged region where no displacement occurs, and is thus estimated. Echo clutter from acoustic scattering at echogenic structures inside the displacement region also shows up on the difference image, but at a different depth from where it was generated owing to the additional acoustic round-trip time as compared to PA signals. |
