Presence Prejudice empathy and embodiment in virtual reality

Lead Research Organisation: University College London
Department Name: Computer Science

Abstract

There are two phases to this research: the first will focus specifically on perspective-taking and the reduction of prejudice or bias towards others. The second is virtual reality's effectiveness as a tool to heal and protect from trauma using exposure therapy, both from the past, via virtual reconstructions of traumatic events, and in the future. Namely, the use of procedural-generated immersive technology to build and deploy bespoke virtual environments in which users can be presented with potentially triggering scenarios in a safe, comfortable space in order to better deal with similar hypothetical situations.
