Geometric methods in algebra

Lead Research Organisation: University of St Andrews
Department Name: Mathematics and Statistics

Abstract

This project will explore the ways in which geometric methods may be used to establish results in algebra. Groups of homeomorphisms will be studied, with particular interest paid to the family of Thompson Groups. Other groups of homeomorphisms studied may include homeomorphisms of the real line and of the circle S^1. This project may also include links to other areas of mathematics, including dynamics (and in particular symbolic dynamics and automorphisms of the shift).
