Abstract

This project investigates the development of adaptive receivers for wireless radio communications, in terms of algorithms and their implementation on parallel processing devices.
The ability of a receiver to steer its beam pattern towards one or more signal(s) of interest, while simultaneously 'nulling' interferers, is the focus of the work. The scenario is based on a multi-element receiver, and advanced Digital Signal Processing (DSP) algorithms to adaptively control the look direction.
Particularly as the trend in wireless communications is towards higher data rates and degrees of mobility, the ability to rapidly adapt the beam pattern in response to changing environments is an important area of research. Adaptive algorithms, potentially operating at high sampling rates, are required, which leads to the need for implementation on high speed, parallel computing platforms. Themes such as fixed point implementation, scheduling of computation, and other implementation issues will therefore be investigated alongside algorithmic research.
