New MDGs, development concepts and principles in a post-2015 world
Description | The MDGFs and EFA establsihed global frameworks for advancing policy and practice work in relation to gender equality and girls' education.A gap was identified in policy, practice and academic commentary which would enable consideration of how gender, education and poverty connected. The potential of using comparative case studies to look at a similar process (the interpretation of global policy frameworks) in a range of different settings was established.The importance of building global networks engaged with work on policy and professional practice in the field of gender, education and poverty was highlighted. The need for work in this area to proceed at supra-national, national and sub-national level in state and non-state structures was established as of considerable importance is planning for global frameworks that might succeed the millennium development goals (MDGs). The existence of particular discourse of 'blaming the poor' and stigmatising poor schoolgirls, notably those who became pregnant was identified as a particular problem in the way teachers and members of school management committees thought about their work in Kenya and South Africa. The findigs from the project questioned the simple assertions that having a global policy framework was sufficient to guide practice and enhancement of action on gender equality in education. The research project examined some of the complex relationships entailed in the translation of global policy frameworks concerned with gender equality to national and local contexts, and whether, and on what terms, any authority is given to local actors. In charting the relationships entailed in taking policy from a space of ideas, ideals, and interpretations of experience, into action, we documented how changed practice does and does not happen looking at state and non state contexts. |
Exploitation Route | This research could be used in building national and supra-national coalitions, developing training materials, and thinking about indicators for monitoring and evaluating projects in gender, education and poverty This research can be put to use in building coalitions of global and local NGOs,officials in government at national and local levels and teachers to look at the way they think about issues of gender, education and poverty, the particular resources they have avaialble for professional training, the measures used in evaluating progress, and the extent to which they take account of the views of poor girls. These processes are particularly pertinent in thinking about a post 2015 MDG agenda, and have been used in rigorously reviewing literature in this area, developing global policy, and informing practice around SDG 4 & 5 |

Results and Impact | E4: Engendering Empowerment: Education and Equality will be an innovative conference for education activists, academics, practitioners, policy makers and girls themselves from many countries of the world, held under the auspices of UNGEI (United Nations Girls' Education Initiative). E4 will take place in April and May 2010 using electronic media (the E-conference) and participatory discussion in Dakar, Senegal (the D-conference). UNGEI initiated the idea of the conference to mark ten years since the organisation was launched at the Education for All (EFA) conference in Dakar in 2000. UNGEI aims to use the conference deliberations as a means to assess how far we have come since 2000 and what significant challenges remain. |
