The literacy practices for assessment in the vocational curriculum - the case of Hospitality
in Journal of Vocational Education & Training
Description | The range and complexity of literacy demands embedded in the assessment practices were considerable in both subject areas at both the higher and lower levels. Some students from both curriculum areas found certain literacy practices to be a barrier for them when considering studying at higher levels. It was found that some of the more academic type literacy practices did discourage some students from engaging in higher level study that they needed in order to compete in the job market. It was also found that some of the simulated practice orientated literacies were not very useful in terms of preparing the students for the literacy demands of employment in the relevant sectors. |
Exploitation Route | Our finding can be put to use by educationalists designing curriculum and assessment practices. |

Description | Finding have been used to inform the curriculum design of a new undergraduate degree programme and development of two further masters level programme. The findings from this project are feeding into work on an Erasmus + project for sharing innovation in Higher Education. Project findings are now being used to to develop Collaborative Open Educational Resources with community stakeholder groups across Europe. Through the Erasmus + project that I am coordinating we are working with community organisations in Slovenia, Denmark, Italy and Finland to develop Open Educational Resources that can be used for the professional education of community workers to promote assets based approaches to working with communities. |
